Why don’t you post more often on Reddit?
The short answer is that Reddit’s structure does not work well for the kind of information I provide.
Hypnotechs is built around hypnosis, hypnotherapy, psychological education, and practical self-assessment. These subjects often require context, careful explanations, and appropriate qualifications. A brief comment can be useful, but it is not always enough to explain an issue responsibly.
I would rather publish a properly considered answer on my own website than reduce a complex question to a few sentences in a fast-moving discussion thread.
There is also an important practical issue: many online communities allow professional answers but restrict professionals from directing readers to relevant educational resources, even when those resources are free.
Didn’t you ask a subreddit moderator group about posting links?
Yes. I asked the moderators of a popular subreddit whether I could answer questions and occasionally include links to relevant material on the Hypnotechs website.
The answer was that I could post answers, but I could not include:
A link to a free FAQ that directly answered the question
A link to a free assessment
A link to an educational article
A link to any other page on my website
In other words, I could contribute information, but I could not show readers where they could find a fuller explanation or a free resource.
That creates an uneven arrangement. The subreddit receives answers from someone with relevant professional experience, while the person providing those answers is treated as though any mention of an independently published resource is automatically advertising or spam.
I understand why moderators want to prevent promotional posts. Unrestricted self-promotion can quickly damage an online community. However, there is a meaningful difference between posting an advertisement and linking to a free, relevant resource that expands on the answer being given.
Are you saying Reddit is unfair to professionals?
Not necessarily. Moderators have a difficult job, and many communities receive large amounts of low-quality promotion. Strict rules are often created because broad restrictions are easier to enforce than case-by-case judgments.
The problem is that broad restrictions can also exclude useful information.
A professional may spend years studying and practicing in a field, yet still be unable to link to a detailed explanation of the subject. Meanwhile, a comment from an anonymous participant may be accepted simply because it does not contain a professional link.
This does not mean every professional answer is correct, and it does not mean every anonymous answer is wrong. It does mean that the platform’s rules may give insufficient recognition to relevant experience and source quality.
You have called out a “credibility gap”, what do you mean by that?
The credibility gap is the difference between genuine subject-matter experience and the way credibility is measured on a social platform.
On Reddit, visibility and perceived authority are influenced by factors such as:
Karma
Account age
Posting frequency
Familiarity with subreddit customs
Community approval
Agreement with prevailing opinions
The ability to write short, persuasive comments
None of those factors necessarily demonstrate expertise in hypnosis, psychometrics, neuroscience, trauma, behavior change, clinical ethics, or any other relevant topic.
A person can spend many hours every day on Reddit and accumulate substantial karma without having professional knowledge of the subject under discussion. At the same time, someone with decades of relevant experience may receive little recognition if they do not regularly participate in the platform.
The result is that Reddit often rewards people who are highly active on Reddit—not necessarily the people who know the most about a particular topic.
Does karma prove that someone knows what they are talking about?
No.
Karma is primarily a measure of how other Reddit users have responded to an account’s posts and comments. It can indicate participation and popularity within the platform, but it is not a professional credential.
Karma does not establish:
Training
Licensing
Clinical experience
Research experience
Accuracy
Ethical conduct
Knowledge of a specialized subject
Whether a claim is supported by reliable evidence
A highly upvoted comment can still be incomplete, mistaken, or based on personal experience rather than established knowledge. Conversely, an accurate and carefully written answer may receive little attention if it is posted at the wrong time, challenges a popular opinion, or does not match the community’s expectations.
Upvotes measure community reaction. They do not independently verify the information.
Why would a subreddit allow your answers but not links to your website?
This usually results from a distinction between “contributing” and “promoting.”
A moderator may view a text-only answer as a contribution to the community, while viewing a website link as promotion—even when:
The link is directly relevant
The page is free to access
The link is not an appointment page
The page contains no sales pitch
The answer would be more useful with additional context
The website is being provided as the source of further information
From a moderation perspective, this rule may be easy to apply: no links from professionals. From a reader’s perspective, however, it can be frustrating. A person may receive a short answer but be prevented from accessing the longer explanation that supports it.
This is one reason I choose to publish comprehensive resources on Hypnotechs rather than rely on social media posts as the primary source of information.
Are you trying to advertise Hypnotechs?
Hypnotechs is a business, so transparency matters. I do not pretend otherwise.
However, there is a difference between openly identifying the source of educational material and using a discussion forum as an advertising channel.
The resources on the Hypnotechs website include:
Educational FAQs
Explanations of hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and psychometrics
Articles about psychological experiences
Free self-assessment tools
Information about common concerns
Guidance about when professional help may be appropriate
A free resource can still be useful even if it is published by a business. Readers should evaluate the quality of the information, the qualifications of the author, the evidence provided, and the limits of the claims.
The fact that a resource appears on a professional website does not automatically make it advertising. Context matters. A link to a page that directly answers a reader’s question is different from an unrelated promotional message. When I do post online, I routinely identify myself as the creator of the resource to avoid confusion about my motivation. There is never any attempt to obfuscate the source.
EVERYTHING on Hypnotechs.com is free. I keep it that way because I enjoy the creative aspect and because much of what I host I couldn’t find elsewhere. I don’t need to advertise for new clients, my schedule is generally full and most of the time I am not accepting any anyway. Everything on the site is available without any sort of sign up. I am also not selling anything on the site. Nothing. So, a business, yes. You got me there. But “advertising”? “Spam”? That feels like a reach.
Why not simply follow the rules and post without links?
I sometimes do.
If I can provide a clear and responsible answer without a link, I may do so. However, there are limits to what can be explained in a short comment.
Hypnosis-related questions often involve distinctions that are easy to lose in a brief response, such as:
Hypnosis versus hypnotherapy
Hypnosis versus relaxation
Suggestibility versus gullibility
Therapeutic suggestion versus coercion
Memory recall versus accurate memory
Personal experience versus clinical evidence
Normal psychological responses versus symptoms requiring evaluation
A short comment can also be misunderstood when readers apply a general statement to a specific personal situation. A longer article gives the reader more opportunity to review definitions, qualifications, limitations, and relevant safety information.
If the platform does not permit a link, the comment may become a summary without enough context. In some cases, not posting is more responsible than presenting an oversimplified answer.
Why not build karma first?
Building karma for its own sake is not my priority.
To become highly visible on Reddit, a person generally needs to participate regularly, understand the culture of individual subreddits, post frequently, and remain active over time. That can be worthwhile for people whose main goal is community participation.
My main goal is different. I want to create accurate, useful, and accessible information about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I would rather spend time researching, writing, reviewing, and maintaining resources than optimize posts for votes.
There is nothing wrong with using Reddit frequently. The issue is that activity on a social platform should not be confused with expertise in the subject being discussed.
Does this mean you believe your experience should automatically be trusted?
No.
Professional experience deserves consideration, but it should not be treated as unquestionable authority. Readers should remain thoughtful and critical, including when reading material from Hypnotechs.
A responsible professional should be willing to:
State the limits of their knowledge
Distinguish evidence from opinion
Avoid exaggerated claims
Explain uncertainty
Acknowledge alternative interpretations
Avoid diagnosing strangers online
Avoid promising guaranteed results
Encourage appropriate medical or mental health care when needed
Experience is relevant, but it is only one part of evaluating information. Claims should also be assessed according to their evidence, reasoning, clarity, and consistency with established knowledge.
Is social media information about hypnosis reliable?
It varies considerably.
Social media can provide valuable personal experiences, practical suggestions, and access to communities. It can also spread misunderstandings quickly. Common problems include:
Anecdotes presented as proof
Unverified claims repeated as facts
Misuse of psychological terminology
Overconfident interpretations of personal symptoms
Advice given without knowing the person’s history
Claims that hypnosis can guarantee a particular outcome
Confusion between entertainment hypnosis and therapeutic practice
Statements that ignore medical, psychiatric, or safety considerations
A popular answer is not necessarily a reliable answer. Readers should consider who made the claim, what evidence supports it, whether the person has relevant training, and whether the answer acknowledges appropriate limits.
Why don’t you use other social media platforms more actively?
The same general concerns apply to many platforms, although each one has different rules and incentives.
Social media tends to reward:
Short content
Frequent posting
Strong emotional reactions
Familiar personalities
Simplified explanations
Controversy
Immediate engagement
Content designed for sharing
Those incentives are not always compatible with careful psychological education. Important qualifications may be left out because they make a post longer or less dramatic. Nuanced information may receive less attention than a confident but unsupported claim.
I am not opposed to social media. It can be useful for communication and public education. I simply do not want social media metrics to determine what information is created or how psychological subjects are explained.
Isn’t avoiding Reddit a missed opportunity?
Possibly, but every form of communication involves tradeoffs.
Reddit provides access to large audiences and active discussions. It can also expose information to readers who need it. However, participation takes time, and the platform’s rules may prevent me from sharing the resources that would make my answers most useful.
The question is not whether Reddit has an audience. It does. The question is whether it is the best place for the kind of information I want to provide.
For Hypnotechs, the website offers advantages:
Articles can be longer and more complete
Definitions can be explained carefully
Related topics can be connected
Pages can be updated when information changes
Readers can access free resources directly
The material is not dependent on one platform’s voting system
Readers do not need an account to read the information
The content can be organized for future reference
Those advantages make the website a better primary home for educational material.
Are you criticizing Reddit users?
No.
Reddit users are not a single group, and many are thoughtful, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. Some communities are well moderated and contain excellent discussions.
My concern is with the platform’s incentives and the limitations of certain moderation policies—not with every person who uses Reddit.
A knowledgeable Reddit user may provide a valuable answer. A person with no formal training may also offer a useful perspective based on personal experience. The difficulty is knowing how much weight to assign to each response when the platform does not clearly distinguish professional expertise, personal experience, opinion, and evidence.
What should readers do when they see conflicting answers online?
Compare the answers carefully instead of choosing the one with the most upvotes.
Consider:
Who is making the claim?
Look for relevant training or experience, but remember that a claimed credential is not automatically verified. What evidence is provided?
Is the answer based on research, established professional guidance, personal experience, or speculation? Is the language appropriately cautious?
Psychological subjects rarely justify absolute claims about every person.Does the answer acknowledge limits?
Responsible information should explain what cannot be concluded from a brief online question. Is the advice safe?
Be cautious of advice that encourages stopping medication, avoiding professional care, revisiting traumatic memories without support, or treating serious symptoms through self-help alone. Is the answer selling something?
Commercial interests do not automatically make information wrong, but they should be disclosed and considered.Does the answer address the actual question?
A confident response can still be irrelevant or based on a misunderstanding.
Does being inactive on social media mean Hypnotechs is unavailable?
No.
It means that the main source of information is the Hypnotechs website rather than ongoing participation in every social media discussion.
The website allows readers to review information at their own pace and find related material without relying on an algorithm, comment thread, or account reputation. It also allows educational resources to remain available after a social media conversation has ended.
For questions about hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and related psychological topics, a carefully written article is often more useful than a short comment that disappears among hundreds of other replies.
What is the central reason you are not active on Reddit?
The central reason is that Reddit rewards platform participation, while my work is focused on subject-matter knowledge and useful education.
I do not want decades of experience to be reduced to a karma score. I also do not want to provide free answers to a community while being prohibited from directing readers to a relevant, free explanation on my own website.
I respect the right of moderators to establish rules. I also respect the right of readers to seek information from sources that explain their qualifications, methods, evidence, and limitations.
That is why I focus my time on Hypnotechs: creating resources that can be read without a social media account, examined in context, and accessed without competing for votes.
What should I remember when evaluating online hypnosis information?
Remember that popularity is not the same as expertise, and confidence is not the same as accuracy.
A useful source should be clear about:
What hypnosis can and cannot reasonably do
The difference between education and treatment
The limits of online advice
The importance of informed consent
The need to consider medical and mental health factors
The difference between evidence and anecdote
When an issue should be discussed with a qualified health professional
Social media can be a starting point, but it should not be the only basis for decisions about your health or psychological well-being.
The purpose of Hypnotechs is to provide information in a format that gives these subjects more space, context, and care than a typical social media comment allows.
